Flexible Learning Spaces

Nyborg Friskole, 2025

Mellemtrinstorvet at Nyborg Friskole is an adaptive learning environment designed to foster circular design principles, creativity and community for 4th-6th graders. Developed through a collaborative process, the project actively engages students and teachers in shaping their own surroundings, allowing the space to continuously transform with its users. Built on principles of adaptability and a resource-conscious approach, the design incorporates modular, reconfigurable elements and repurposed materials, creating a dynamic setting that encourages exploration, engagement, and hands-on learning.

Rather than a fixed structure, Mellemtrinstorvet is conceived as a dynamic and evolving space that invites students to engage, build, and reshape their environment over time. A key feature is the custom-designed consisting of five mobile elements and made from upcycled bookshelves. Alongside large poufs in recycled textiles and floor-to-ceiling curtains, the adaptability of the project allows for a variety of learning scenarios — from morning assemblies and group work to quiet reading corners, ‘mini-library,’ and movement-based activities.
